Kolkata Shopping: After spring, monsoon is perhaps the most loved season in the Kolkata. A number of cultural events are held during this time in Kolkata to celebrate and welcome the rain.
Every season has its own impact on the dressing style of people. Comfort and convenience play a major role in determining ones wardrobe. Let us start off with the casual wear clothes because that is what we in Kolkata love to wear most of the time. Be it for an adda session with friends or for a shopping spree, we Kolkatans love to sport our individual style. Water logging and muddy splashes are a common phenomenon Hence, full length pants and long dresses are a bad idea.
Capris, the three quarter pants and leggings are the best picks of the season. This year, the palazzos and harem pants are ruling the Kolkata fashion market in their three quarter avatar. While the monsoon brings relief from the scorching heat, the humidity still keeps the city sweaty. This is perhaps the reason behind the popularity of the loose clothes
These clothes are available in several stores in the Kolkata shopping markets and shopping malls. But you may want them to be pocket friendly and yet exclusive and ethnic. In other words, the Dakshinapan shopping complex, the Gariahat Shopping Market and the Hatibagan shopping area are good.
These garments can be teamed up with shirts, kurtis and long tops. Leather shoes and slippers, kolhapuri shoes and stilettos are to be strictly avoided. Kittos ( floaters ) and flipflops are the wisest choices. Apart from that, fancy slippers made of rubber and soft plastic materials are good. They have flooded the markets and the most fashionable ones are available in the New Market shopping area.
But the monsoon is also about getting dressed up. After winter, most of the weddings in Bengal are held during the monsoon season. Though many young girls are embracing the salwar suits, the saree still remains the top choice for the traditional functions. It is always better to avoid materials like cotton, silk and tussar in the monsoon. For example ,it is better to opt for georgette, chiffon and synthetic sarees. These fabrics dry up quickly, just in case you are caught in a quick downpour. The best places to look for these sarees are Anand, Rupahali and Saarang in Park street.
Saarang and Kalika in Gariahat, Mriganayani in Dakshinapan and in a number of shops in New Market. The New Market has plenty of options for dressy salwar suits as well. The New Market is the most popular Kolkata shopping market.
The typical Bengali look at a monsoon wedding is perhaps a white or black saree, a big red bindi and heavy silver or oxidized jewellery. Also a must for an evening like this is a jasmine or mogra flowers embracing your hairdo.
