Jodhpur was founded in the 15th Century as the new capital of the Marwar region of Rajasthan by Rao Jodha. Hence the name Jodhpur( Jodha’s city -pur refers to city). He was a chieftain, a Rajput from the Rathore clan. Rajputs were the warrior clan from Rajasthan.
The Mehrangarh Fort and the the Umaid Bhavan are two iconic places to visit in Jodhpur.
The Mehrangarh Fort is certainly one of the largest forts in India. It is situated 410 feet above the city. This imposing fort was built by Rao Jodha. The city of Jodhpur skirts around the fort. The fort is wonderfully preserved and its grandeur can be seen in the rooms inside- most notably, the Sheesh Mahal (room of mirrors), the Moti Mahal (room of pearls), and the Phool Mahal (room of flowers). There are innumerable objects , that once belonged to the royal family , on display in the fort.
The Umaid Bhavan Palace was completed in 1943. The erstwhile royal family of Jodhpur still lives in the Umaid Bhavan. The palace museum is well worth a visit.
Recently, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas had their wedding in the Umaid Bhavan Palace Hotel.
