Mumbai
Between the 2nd century BCE and 14th century CE, the islands were ruled by dynasties such as the Satavahanas, Mauryas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, and Shilaharas. The Delhi Sultanate captured the islands in 1348, later passing them to the Sultanate of Gujarat in 1391.
- Portuguese Era: In 1534, the Portuguese seized Mumbai and named it “Bombaim.” They built forts and churches, leaving a strong colonial imprint.
- British Rule: In 1661, Mumbai was handed to the British Crown as part of Catherine of Braganza’s dowry when she married King Charles II. By 1668, it was leased to the East India Company, which developed it into a major port city.
- Modern Growth: Mumbai became the hub of trade, textiles, and later Bollywood, evolving into India’s financial capital and a global metropolis.
