What is a Jhumka

Jhumkas are an earring design that is more popular in South India.They are known as Jimikis in South India. It is bell shaped earring. They are shaped like an inverted dome or an inverted cone.Traditional gold jumka designs are very popular. Jhumkas have recently been in the news with the  popular Jhumka song by Alia Bhat & Ranveer Singh in the film Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani

Jhumkas made of pure gold, silver, gold with diamonds, rubies or emeralds or with diamond stones. They are available in various sizes and lengths. It is a very popular design and is available in all the gold and diamond jewellery shops in Chennai and in Bangalore.

Gold Jumka Designs

Baratnatyam dancers and Kuchupudi dancers wear Jhumkas. It is an essential part of the dance costume & jewellery. It is also known as Jimki in south India. The Jimiki is worn with mattal . The latter is a chain that is pinned on the hair.The Baratnatyam dance jewellery is known as Temple Jewellery. Oftentimes ,it is made of gold and other metals such as brass & copper and is studded with kemp stones or rubies. This kind of jewellery looks attractive on the stage.

Silver jhumkas and ones made with semi-precious stones are also available. Two or three small jumkas  attached together also make an elegant design. It is interesting to note that the shape of the Jimiki or Jhumka  primarily remains the same.The materials used to craft it are innumerable. From, gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, precious, semi precious stones, the jhumka is an all time favourite. Further, the length of the jhumka & the width are flexible and would depend on the deisgn.
