Gotta meaning Gotta Patti simply means gold or silver ribbons attached by applique work to a base cloth. Firstly, the ribbons are flat and they are embroidered onto the fabric. Further, it is interesting to know that these ribbons are primarily procured from Lucknow. This work is however very popular in Rajasthan.

As a matter of fact, it is extensively used in bridal lehengas and bridal wear sarees. In other words, it offers a very rich kind of finish to the fabric. and looks magnificent
Gotta is applique work made of thin metal ribbons coated with gold or silver.The design is made of several small leaves known as patti in Hindi.
The work starts with tracing the design and spreading chalk powder over it. Small pieces of the zari ribbon is cut in the shape of diamond or leaves and placed in the appropriate places as per the design and hemmed on to the base cloth. It is typically done on satin, silk,chiffon and georgette fabrics. Typically, geometric patterns are adopted for the Gota Pati work.

As mentioned earlier, dresses with this kind of work are popular in Rajasthan. Bridal lehengas, simple ghagras, dupattas and sarees have extensive Gota patti work done on them.Some head turbans also have the gotta .
The origin of this type of embellishment can be traced back to the Persian & Mughal empire.Gotta was typically embellished on garments made for temple deities & Royalty.It was made of pure gold & silver. Slowly but surely this beautiful art form has been promoted on everyday clothing with more affordable substitutes.
