At first, Archana Shah started Bandhej in 1985.They have a chain of stores in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore & Chennai. Bandhej is a generic term used for one of the traditional textiles or fabrics from the States of Rajasthan & Gujarat. It refers to the tie & dye technique that is used in these fabrics. Small strings are tied in predefined places on a white fabric. The fabric is then dyed in deep dark colours. The strings are opened and the fabric is left to dry. What happens is that the colourful fabrics in bright pinks, blues and yellow have non uniform white dots on them. Therefore, that is Bandhej.
This Chennai shop specializes in dresses and sarees made of Bandhej fabric. It is noteworthy that they work with handloom or handcrafted textiles. The textiles are created by traditional crafts people in Gujarat. In addition, Bandhej stocks traditional dupattas in the bandhej design.
