HISTORY OF DELHI

Delhi, the capital of India, has a rich and complex history that spans several millennia. Delhi has been ruled by various dynasties in the past .The earliest references to Delhi can be traced back to the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata where  it was referred to as Indraprastha. It was the capital city of the Pandavas. Archaeological evidence suggests that the region was settled as far back as the Iron Age .

Delhi was ruled by powerful Rajput dynasties in the medieval period.The city’s strategic location made it a target for various invaders. In 1192, the Afghan warrior Muhammad of Ghori captured Delhi, establishing the Delhi Sultanate in 1206 .

Mughal Rule

The Mughal Empire, was established  in 1526 after they defeated the  last Lodi sultan at the Battle of Panipat. It  marked a golden age for Delhi . The city flourished under Mughal rule. Emperor Shah Jahan, built the walled city of Shahjahanabad, including the Red Fort and the  Jama Masjid . However, the Mughal Empire eventually declined.  Nader Shah , the Persian ruler invaded Delhi in 1739 .He is said to have looted the Peacock throne& theKohinoor diamond from the Red Fort.

In the 19th century, Delhi came under British colonial rule,. The British shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911.India gained independence  from the British in 1947. New Delhi was officially declared the capital of India .

Today, Delhi is  a modern metropolis, showcasing a rich tapestry of cultures and historical landmarks .The city’s architectural heritage, includes the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and numerous other monuments .

World Heritage Monuments In Delhi

Delhi is dotted with world heritage monuments. Each dynasty contributed to the city’s architecture and culture, with notable constructions such as the Qutub Minar by the Mamluks .The Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb & the Qutub Minar are UNESCO sites. The Mughal rulers and the British rulers have built exquisite monuments to mark their reign.

Lutyens’ Delhi

This is a central area and it is  named after the British architect Edwin Lutyens.  Besides, Herbert Baker designed the Secretariat Buildings (North and South Block). Additionally, he designed bungalows on the then King George’s Avenue (south of the Secretariats) for high-ranking officials.

Connaught Place (CP),for instance is a circular market designed by British architects and named after the Duke of Connaught.

Chandni Chowk is the most  historic & exciting market. This is in the walled city of Old Delhi. Accordingly, it is a great attraction for tourists.As a matter of fact, it is the oldest shopping market in Delhi. It is situated opposite the Red Fort. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan designed this Fort & Chandni Chowk Market. Further, it is a wholesale market and what you will get there will either not be available in other shopping markets or would be expensive. It is popular for  bridal dresses, fabrics, textiles, laces, brocade borders, bangles ,silver jewellery & attar (perfumes). It is crowded at all times. The best way to go around is to take a rickshaw.

Connaught Place-New Delhi

As a matter of fact,  the design architecture of this market is amazing. This was once the financial capital & the centre of shopping in Delhi.However, newer shopping places in Delhi have taken the spotlight now.Also, the financial center has  moved to Gurgaon. In addition, Janpath, in the vicinity of Connaught Place& offers a great street shopping experience. The CCI (Central Cottage industries) in Janpath, has handicrafts  & textiles from all over India . It is a huge shop.Besides, Baba Kharak Singh Marg has a row of Government emporia from all Indian States.Do not miss a visit to these shops.

Khan Market & South Extension Market in New Delhi

Khan Market, near the Lodhi Gardens, is a stylish shopping market. In addition, there are bookshops and coffee shops and there is luxury shopping. It is very popular with the expat crowd.The South Extension Market is another popular market in South Delhi for bridal wear and jewellery.

A visit to other shopping places such as Lajpat Nagar Market & Sarojini Nagar Market will introduce you to street shops. Comparatively, they are less expensive than say, Khan Market & South Extension. At the same time,a visit to Dilli Haat in INA market is an interesting experience for tourists. It is an open air shopping experience in the center of Delhi.

The airport is 1 hour from the city center, Connaught Place.  One can take a Metro, cab or Uber to anyplace in the city. There are several airport hotels that are conveniently located near the airport.

The local language is Hindi. It is widely spoken & understood.In addition, English is the 2nd language that is spoken & understood .

Credit cards, UPI & Indian currency are widely accepted everywhere.

Delhi tour buses are very popular. One can also use Uber or hotel cabs to go around Delhi.
