Origins

The origins of marble crafting goes back to the period of the Mughal Empire (1526–1761) in India. During this period, craftsmen were imparted training in the crafting of marble. The Rajputana rulers appreciated this work of art and the state of Rajasthan became the heart of marble handicrafts.

Makrana Marble

Above all, the Makrana marble or the ‘milky white marble’ from Rajasthan is considered to be one of the finest qualities. This white marble is mostly used in sculpture and building decor. It was used to build iconic monuments such as the Taj Mahal.

The Making of a Marble Handicraft

For example, skilled artisans are involved in the making of marble handicrafts .Further, the stone is carved first either with hands or the help of machines. In addition,  they are painted beautifully with fine brush strokes dipped in bright colours.

finally, some of them  are also embellished with the exquisite stone work. Kundan, gem stones or colourful glass stones help add a classy touch to these handicrafts.
